Starting with the Anchor Piece
Every gallery wall needs an anchor. This is typically the largest or most meaningful piece in the collection. For many of our customers, this anchor is a custom paint by numbers uk kit. By uploading a cherished family photo, a picture from a recent holiday, or a snapshot of your house, you create a central piece of art that means something special to you.
If you are an animal lover, a custom pet paint by numbers portrait also makes a perfect anchor. Once you have this central piece finished and framed, you can start selecting standard kits with complementary colours to build out the rest of the wall around it.
Never hammer a nail until you are certain of the layout. Trace the outline of each framed canvas onto newspaper and cut it out. Use masking tape to arrange these paper templates on your wall. This allows you to stand back and adjust the spacing without putting unnecessary holes in your plaster.
Choosing Your Layout: Grid vs. Organic
There are two main ways to arrange your canvases.
If you like clean lines and modern design, choose a grid layout. This works best if all your paint by numbers are exactly the same size. You hang them in a perfect square or rectangle, leaving an identical gap between every single frame. This looks incredibly tidy and intentional.
If you have canvases of different sizes, an organic layout is much better. You start with your large anchor piece in the middle and arrange the smaller pieces around it in a cluster. To keep it from looking messy, ensure you maintain a consistent spacing of exactly two inches between every frame.

Matching Your Frames
A gallery wall is a collection of different images, so you need something to tie them all together visually. The easiest way to achieve this is through your framing choices.
Using the exact same frame for every painting creates instant cohesion. If you stretch your canvases using our DIY wooden frame kits, leaving the edges exposed for a gallery wrap finish, make sure every piece on the wall is stretched the same way. If you prefer external frames, pick one colour, like solid black or natural oak, and stick to it for the entire display.
