The Last Summer

Thatched and tiled rooftops rise above a lush tangle of greens, a small figure stands on a winding path beside a brook, chimney smoke rises into a swirling blue and white sky, and the whole village of Auvers-sur-Oise hums with the energy of Van Gogh's brush in its final, extraordinary weeks. Painted in May or June 1890, Houses in Auvers belongs to the most concentrated burst of creative output in art history: seventy paintings in seventy days before his death at thirty-seven. As a paint by numbers for adults it captures Van Gogh at his most structurally complex, every section of the canvas alive with directional colour and texture. Part of our Famous Art collection and our Landscapes and Scenery collection.

  • Van Gogh paint by numbers: based on Houses in Auvers (1890), one of his final and most structurally rich village landscapes
  • Paint by numbers village: thatched roof, tiled rooftops, winding path, a figure, and lush garden greens in Van Gogh's most complex village composition
  • Paint by numbers landscape: foreground path, mid-ground houses and gardens, and a swirling summer sky create three distinct depth zones across the canvas
  • Three colour depths: 24 colours for bold Van Gogh character, 36 for detailed rooftop and foliage work, 48 for the full tonal complexity of every section
  • Three frame options: rolled canvas, DIY wooden frame kit, or fully ready-framed and ready to hang

Why Auvers is Van Gogh's most complex landscape to paint

Three Depth Zones, One Canvas

What makes Houses in Auvers so structurally satisfying is the clear progression from foreground to background: the golden path and brook in the lower section, the thatched roof, tiled houses, and figure in the middle, and the deep greens of the gardens and trees rising to meet a swirling sky above. Each zone has its own dominant colour and texture, and painting through them in sequence produces a finished work with genuine depth and perspective. In the 48-colour version all three zones are fully mapped with their own tonal complexity, and the transition from warm foreground to cool sky is one of the most rewarding sequences in our paint by numbers landscape range. For more village and countryside designs, browse our Landscapes and Scenery collection.

The Rooftops and the Thatching

The large thatched roof on the left is one of Van Gogh's most texturally expressive surfaces in the Auvers period: thick diagonal strokes in golds, ambers, and dark browns that feel almost three-dimensional. Beside it the orange-red tiled roof and the white and grey cottage walls create a richly varied mid-section that is among the most detailed and rewarding in our Van Gogh paint by numbers series. In the 36 and 48-colour versions the tonal variations within the thatching and the tile sections are fully mapped, and painting through them produces the same tactile, energetic quality that defines the original. For techniques on managing complex textured sections, our 7 pro techniques guide covers everything you need.

The Complete Van Gogh Collection

Houses in Auvers joins our Van Gogh Wheat Field and Starry Night kits as part of a series that spans three of his most celebrated periods: the swirling cosmic landscapes of Saint-Rémy, the golden fields of Provence, and the vibrant village scenes of his final summer at Auvers. All are available in the same colour depths and frame options, making them a complete Van Gogh gallery wall for any home. For a personal alternative, our custom paint by numbers service creates a numbered canvas from any photograph, or our custom pet paint by numbers does the same for an animal portrait. (Tip: Start with the sky and work downward, establishing the swirling blues and whites before painting the deep greens of the upper garden and trees against them. The mid-ground houses and rooftops should come next, followed by the foreground path and brook as the final section. Painting from background to foreground is the most natural sequencing for this composition and gives you the best control over the transitions between each depth zone. For sky and landscape depth techniques, our landscape painting tips guide covers the full approach.)

⭐ Choosing Your Perfect Kit

Which Colour Count is Right for You?
More colours mean more detail, smoother transitions, and a more realistic final painting.

  • 24 Colours (Standard): Great for a classic paint by numbers feel with bold, distinct colour blocks. Perfect for beginners and simpler designs.
  • 36 Colours (Most Popular): Highly recommended for most paintings. This option captures subtle details in faces, landscapes, and pets, creating a richer, more nuanced result.
  • 48 Colours (Ultimate Detail): The ultimate choice for complex, high-resolution designs. This provides the most realistic and impressive finish with the smoothest colour gradients.
